Room to Love: Creating a coastal vibe that’s not New England-y

THE RUG

The rug was designer Kristina Crestin’s starting point, lending a California cool vibe to the family room in an Acorn Deck House in Manchester-by-the-Sea. “It was important to use blue tones to establish a coastal feel that didn’t feel traditionally New England,’’ Crestin said.

THE ART AND THE SOFA

The three-seat sofa with tufted back is upholstered in a nubby, moss-colored velvet. “We wanted an organic color that wasn’t gray,’’ Crestin said. A large aerial photo by Martina + Reem from The Print Atelier anchors the gallery-style art installation.

THE CHANDELIERS AND THE FLOOR LAMP

The Mobile chandeliers from West Elm balance the higher-priced iron floor lamp by Visual Comfort and incorporate graphic, sculptural elements into the space.

THE WOOD STOVE

A corner wood stove lends warmth without affecting the layout of the room, unlike a wood- burning fireplace, which would have required a chimney and hearth.

THE TABLE

An ecofriendly Beckwourth coffee table made from exotic demolition hardwoods, white oak, and black walnut is an earthy touch that provides storage. Plus, it’s durable enough to withstand a family with teens.

THE CHAIRS

Plenty of seats flank the sofa. A pair of chairs in turquoise upholstery brings another dose of blue, while a leather armchair and a rattan lounge chair with ottoman add texture.
