Travel is back on for many this summer, but what about all the weeknights and weekends that you’re not on the road? Lisa Buyuk of Buyuk Interiors can help you transform your own backyard into a glam destination. The Boston-based interior designer spent the past year refining ways to bring interior living outside.
Here, Buyuk shows us how to use a tent to create an outdoor space that draws on the New England summer houses with mismatched furniture accumulated over multiple generations. “It’s meant to evoke the magic and fantasy of childhood summers,” Buyuk said.
How to get the look
Tent This is a serious structure that harkens back to weeklong camping trips, secret forts, and safaris. “I wanted a feeling of glamping or escapism,” Buyuk said. (From $1,594 at stouttent.com)
Sofa Buyuk loves how the color of this sofa blends with the yard to create a feeling of being surrounded by greenery. Don’t worry, it’s an indoor/outdoor fabric ($1,998 at anthropologie.com)
Rug Skip the scratchy grass with an area rug. Buyuk opted for one by Perennials available through design professionals. “The pattern echoes topographical landscape,” she said. We also love this similar indoor/outdoor design. (From $59.95 at crateandbarrel.com)
Chairs Add a vintage vibe with a wicker butterfly chair. Buyuk went for a true vintage piece, but reproductions are just as fun. More is more with these pieces. ($998 at anthropologie.com)
Easy Chairs Balance the boho with tailored easy chairs in weather-friendly rope. “These are open and breezy for those hot summer days and nights,” Buyuk says. ($1,148 at serenaandlily.com)
Coffee table Buyuk chose a luxe cluster of tables with a lily pad motif ($1,299 at cb2.com) that can service those sitting on the ground or in a seat. An easy-to-move ceramic drinks table doubles as a stool. ($159 at westelm.com)
Television You’ll want a weatherproof outdoor television for watching movies at night. Or, substitute with an old-school movie screen and projector. (From $1,498.95 at amazon.com)
Planters No matter how lush your lawn, you’ll want to add greenery in oversize planters to anchor the tent to the landscape. These cement planters masquerading as baskets are ingenious. (From $29.95 at cb2.com) Incorporating a tiered plant stand ($199.20 at frontgate.com) is a nice way to get some height.
Next, pile on the accessories
Pillows This collection of butterfly pillows celebrates the New York Botanical Garden. The designers are digitally printed using UV-resistant paint on outdoor fabric. (From $126.65 at frontgate.com)
Candle holders Intersperse metal cage lanterns ($19 at etsy.com) with Moravian star pendants ($90 at etsy.com). Don’t leave flames unattended.
Lanterns Teak lanterns up the magic (and the romance) in your outdoor wonderland. (From $152.10 at frontgate.com)
Glasses Acrylic glasses in summer-y hues are a must-have for entertaining. (From $22/set of four at westelm.com)
