The NBA has given basketball fans a five-game lineup of highly competitive and compelling matchups to watch on Christmas Day, including the Celtics vs. Nets. With no NHL or NFL games, a day full of high caliber hoops might be just want many sports fans are asking for.
Here’s a look at the matchups and game details for each.
Celtics at Nets
Details: Boston Celtics at Brooklyn Nets, 12 p.m. (ESPN)
Overview: Earlier in the season these teams engaged in a brawl that spilled into the stands and resulted in Celtics guard Rajon Rondo being suspended for two games. Let’s hope that on Christmas Day they stay focused on playing and not squabbling.
If they do, fans might see a point guard duel worthy of the spotlight: Rondo vs. Deron Williams.
Both teams are chasing the Knicks in the Atlantic Conference with the 76ers nipping at their heals.
Knicks at Lakers
Details: New York Knicks at Los Angeles Lakers, 3 p.m. (ABC)
Overview: The Lakers may not resemble the storied franchise of the past, carrying a sub-.500 record into the Christmas showcase, but it’s always entertaing to see Kobe Bryant in action, especially against the soaring New York Knicks, who stand alone at the top of the Eastern Conference.
Thunder at Heat
Details: Oklahoma City Thunder at Miami Heat, 5:30 p.m. (ABC)
Overview: LeBron James on a national stage in a rematch of the 2012 NBA Finals? What more could you ask for?
James has a streak of 24 games of at least 20 points to start the season, and he hasn’t committed a personal foul in six games. Will anti-Heat fans have their holiday wishes granted and see Kevin Durant’s Thunder – the best NBA team in the standings – come out on top? Durant is third in the league with a 27.9 scoring average.
Rockets at Bulls
Details: Houston Rockets at Chicago Bulls, 8 p.m. (ESPN)
Overview: The Chicago Bulls lead the Central Conference, but Jeremy Lin, James Harden, and old friend Kevin McHale would like nothing more than to show what their 13-12 team is fully capable of in this prime time matchup.
Nuggets at Clippers
Details: Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Clippers, 10:30 p.m. (ESPN)
Overview: After a long day of presents, egg nog, and entertaining family, why not settle down and take in a matchup between the one L.A. team that is actually playing well and a Denver team that is capable of plenty but in most need of consistency?
