Celtics small forward Luigi “Gigi’’ Datome became a fan favorite during his two-plus months in Boston as much for his tenacity on the court as his eccentricities, from his distinctive style to his general hilarity. It also helped that crowds at TD Garden found it really fun to chant his name .

With the Celtics eliminated from the playoffs, Datome is set to become a free agent. On Monday, he took to Facebook to express his appreciation for the Celtics fans and organization.

The post is both a sweet ode to his adopted home and an interesting look at the mentality of a pro basketball journeyman. Born in Italy, the 27-year-old played a decade in Europe before signing with the Detroit Pistons in 2013.

As if his words alone weren’t worth a few minutes of your time, Datome also shared a brilliant caricature.

Today with a cool head I want to write some thoughts about the former season, my 12th as a pro, which ended yesterday....

After the Celtics acquired Datome from the Pistons in a February trade, he scored 94 points in 18 regular-season games on 49.4 percent shooting with 25 rebounds. He appeared in three playoff games, totaling four points.
