Rookie Jordan Mickey has been forced to wait patiently for a chance to contribute to the Celtics this year, but that hasn’t stopped him from putting together an impressive highlight reel with the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League.
The 6-foot-8 big man added to that collection this week while taking part in the D-League Showcase with the Red Claws in Santa Cruz, California.
Bakersfield Jam guard Xavier Mumford was driving the lane for a layup on Thursday night as Mickey waited in the paint for his arrival. In anticipation of the block, Mumford tried an up-and-under layup attempt, but Mickey made an incredible adjustment mid-air.
The LSU product leads the D-League in blocks per game with 4.7 and is also averaging a double-double by posting 18 points and 10.6 rebounds over 18 games. Celtics head coach Brad Stevens is “curious’’ about Mickey’s potential at the NBA level, but the team’s frontcourt logjam has kept him in Maine.
With the Celtics’ having lost four of their last five games and veterans in the frontcourt not giving Stevens consistent play, the 21-year-old might get a chance in the big leagues sooner rather than later.
