Sunday night, fewer than 24 hours before the madness of the Boston Marathon was set to begin, elite runner Shalane Flanagan reflected on the race’s significance to her.

The four-time Olympian and 2017 New York City Marathon winner who grew up in Marblehead Instagrammed a photo of her marathon bib and running shoes, along with a sentimental caption.

“22years ago, at age 14, I stood on the corner of Hereford and Boylston cheering on my father and all the runners of the 100th Boston Marathon.
My dream to become a marathoner started that day.
I hope some little boy or girl watching tomorrow’s race is inspired like I was, to relentlessly pursue their dreams.
Lots of love to everyone tomorrow….run proud and run #bostonstrong”
