William Thomas is running Boston for IMPACT Melanoma
"Trust me, nothing gets you through the final miles quite like knowing that you’re running for a reason!"

In our “Why I’m Running” series, Boston Marathon runners share what’s inspiring them to make the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton to Boston on April 15, 2019.
Name: William Thomas
Age: 53
From: Manila, Philippines

My name is William Thomas, and I’ll be flying back to the States and running the Boston Marathon to raise money for IMPACT Melanoma, an amazing Boston-based group fighting skin cancer through education and prevention. Why this cause? Well, I work in the Philippines, and here in Southeast Asia a lot of people don’t have access to preventative medical checkups. With IMPACT Melanoma’s downloadable resources, public health professionals can help people learn to spot melanomas themselves, and they can also teach hairstylists, massage therapists, and others to see things that a client might not see.
By supporting IMPACT Melanoma’s efforts, and raising awareness about the signs of skin cancer, we can help people address these health issues when survival rates are high and move on to a better life. Boston will be my “sixth star” among the Abbott World Marathon Majors, and the third one in which I have run for charity. Trust me, nothing gets you through the final miles quite like knowing that you’re running for a reason!
