‘Stronger than the storm’: The famous Marathon Monday golden retrievers offer moral support

Although the Boston Marathon is postponed, Penny and Spencer took a moment along the route anyway.

A local photographer known for posting photos of his golden retrievers had a special message to honor the postponed 2020 Boston Marathon.

Rich Powers took pictures of Penny (left) and Spencer (right) holding banners with messages of support: Boston Strong and “stronger than the storm.”

On Instagram, the accompanying post reads: “Today we would be cheering [email protected] runners but 2020 had other plans. Stay healthy and will be ready to cheer you on in September.”

Powers told that he took the photos at Ashland State Park at 6:30 a.m. Monday morning — the same spot where they’ve supported runners for the past six Marathon Mondays, he said. Powers chose the early hour because he wasn’t sure “if there would be some renegade runners, and I wanted to be sure I did not compromise social distancing.”

He said Penny and Spencer are certified therapy dogs and that they volunteered weekly at hospitals and assisted living facilities prior to COVID-19.

In an image that has circulated on social media, Powers photoshopped in a different message on Penny’s sign: “See you in September.”
