Red Sox

Still kicking

Sure, the Red Sox have left you with nothing to watch on TV this late in the season for the first time since 2002, but you’ll always have 2004. In that spirit, we’re recapping last year’s historic ALCS between the Red Sox and Yankees. Today, Game 4 …

The road back starts here. In one of the greatest games in Red Sox postseason history, Boston rallied to tie it in the bottom of the ninth against Mariano Rivera (sparked by Dave Roberts’ swipe of second — the biggest steal in Sox history), and David Ortiz won it at 1:22 a.m. (more than 5 hours after the game began) with a walkoff homer in the 12th inning.

Some memorable quotes from after the game:

  • David Ortiz: “We’re home. When we’re at home, anything can happen. This is a team that never gives up. We have a whole bunch of times come from behind . . . even if we lose, we play the game the right way.”
  • Keith Foulke: “It definitely gives us momentum. This team doesn’t get down. When we’re in a hole, we don’t give up. We’re going to go out there and fight until there’s no fight left.”
  • Johnny Damon: “Hopefully, we’ll be known as the Cardiac Kids. Hopefully, we keep coming back.”
  • Terry Francona: “We set out today to win. That was our only objective. Somehow we did it. Now our only objective is to win [today]. That’s what we have to do.”
  • Dan Shaughnessy: Carlton Fisk in 1975. David Ortiz in 2004. Twelfth inning both times. Hold on to those tickets for this afternoon’s fifth game of the 2004 American League Championship Series. The left-for-dead Red Sox are still breathing.
