■ The Phillies’ Roy Halladay has been awful in first innings, posting a 5.63 ERA in 24 games.

■ Philadelphia’s Ryan Howard became the second-fastest player to reach 300 homers. It came in his 1,093d at-bat; Ralph Kiner did it in 1,087 at-bats.

■ Atlanta’s Chipper Jones moved ahead of Lou Gehrig for 58th on the career hits list with 2,722. He is one hit away from tying Roberto Alomar for fifth place among switch hitters.

■ St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina left in the ninth with lower back spasms. He exited after trying to get away from a pitch by Carlos Marmol that nearly hit him.

■ The Cubs’ Darwin Barney saw his errorless streak at second base reach an NL-record 137 games, four short of the major league record set by Detroit’s Placido Polanco in 2007.
