Clay Buchholz Activated from DL; Chris Capuano Designated for Assignment

Clay Buchholz is back and hopes for a fresh start to the season tonight against the Mariners.

The Red Sox today activated Buchholz while southpaw reliever Chris Capuano was designated for assignment.

Buchholz, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 28 with a hyperextended left knee, last pitched for the Red Sox on May 26 at Atlanta. The 29-year-old made two rehab starts for Triple-A Pawtucket going 0-1 with a 2.53 ERA, two walks, and 10 strikeouts. In his final rehab start on June 19, Buchholz threw 6 scoreless innings against Minnesota’s Rochester affiliate, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out five.

In 10 starts for the Red Sox this season, Buchholz is 2-4 with a 7.02 ERA on the season.

The 35-year-old Capuano struggled in his stint with the Red Sox this season, going 1-1 with a 4.55 ERA, 15 walks, and 29 strikeouts in 28 relief appearances in his first year in the AL.
