Shane Victorino Shut Down, Unlikely to Join Red Sox in the Bronx

After it originally looked like Shane Victorino would return to the Red Sox this weekend for their three-game set in the Bronx, that plan may have been scrapped after Victorino was shut down from his minor league rehab assignment on Wednesday, according to multiple media reports.

Victorino, who hasn’t played for Boston since injuring his right hamstring against the Rays on May 23, had been playing for Triple-A Pawtucket and Single-A Lowell, but the stint was put on hold due to a sore back, John Farrell said before Wednesday’s game with the Mariners.

Farrell said there was no timeframe for Victorino’s return, which the team had hoped would be for the last three games of the Sox’ 10-game road trip.

The 2013 Gold Glover was hitting .242 with a home run and 10 RBIs in 21 games for the Sox before he was placed on the DL. He missed the first 22 games of the season after suffering a hamstring injury in Spring Training, the same one that took him out of the May 23 game in Tampa.
In seven rehab games with the PawSox, Victorino recorded just one hit in 21 at bats; he went 0-for-3 in one game with Lowell. He played six innings for the PawSox on Tuesday, going 0-for-4.
