BOSTON – The Red Sox will add left-hander Tommy Layne as the 26th player for the second game of today’s doubleheader against the Orioles at Fenway Park.

Layne, 29, is 5-1 with six saves and a 1.51 ERA in 30 appearances for Triple-A Pawtucket this season. In his last appearances for the PawSox, Wednesday against Rochester, Layne pitched a perfect inning. In his last 10 appearances, spanning 9 2/3 innings, he is 1-0 with six saves, allowing one run on five hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

A 26th-round pick by the Diamondbacks in 2007, he made his big league debut in 2012 with the Padres and was 2-2 with two saves and a 2.84 ERA in 40 appearances spanning 25 1/3 for San Diego over the last two seasons.

Layne joined the Sox as a free agent in November. He made nine spring training appearances for the Sox, going 0-1 with one save and a 4.35 ERA in 10 1/3 innings.

“He’s continued what he did in spring training and that has been very successful against left-handers,” manager John Farrell said. “He’s had decent ability to get good right-handed hitters out. He’s not solely a situational lefty type of reliever. But the performance has been very consistent.”

Layne will return to the PawSox after the doubleheader.
