WEEI personality Kirk Minihane had strong words for FOX Sports sideline reporter Erin Andrews, who he called a “bitch’’ on Wednesday morning’s “Dennis & Callahan Show.’’

Minihane, the third wheel on the show, lit into Andrews while discussing her MLB All-Star postgame interview with St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright.

Wainwright stepped into a bit of controversy during Tuesday night’s MLB All-Star game after saying he threw a couple of “pipe shots’’ to New York Yankees star Derek Jeter. He later backtracked on that comment after a torrent of criticism was heaped his way.

“What I meant to say was I’m intentionally trying to throw a strike to get him out. It’s what I do most of the time, almost all the time,’’ Wainwright said. “’Piping one’ is the wrong window for that. It really is. If I’m going to get taken to the slaughterhouse for saying a stupid phrase, then I deserve it. What can you do?’’

Wainwright tried his best to explain away what were obviously meat balls for Jeter in his interview with Andrews, who was maybe too quick to let him off the hook.

“Well, we appreciate you clearing that up,’’ Andrews said. “Don’t you love social media?’’

To which Wainwright responds, “no I do not love social media.’’

That was Minihane’s jumping off point Wednesday when the top WEEI show took a sudden misogynistic turn.

“What a bitch,’’ Minihane said. “I hate her. What a gutless bitch. Seriously, go away. Drop dead. I mean seriously, what the hell is wrong with her? First of all, followup. Secondly, the guy admitted he did it. He told reporters he threw a couple of pipe bombs. So how is that social media’s fault?

“I hate her. I seriously hate her so much. Yeah, only if it wasn’t for social… social media is the reason she has a big house. Shut up. Shut up.’’

Minihane seemed to realize he had gone too far saying later in the same segment that, “I shouldn’t call her a bitch because I’m sure she’s a nice person.’’

Co-host Gerry Callahan also chimed in with a couple of “bubblehead’’ and “bimbo’’ remarks. Boston.com has reached out to WEEI for comment.

UPDATE: State attorney general and democratic gubernatorial candidate Martha Coakley was so incensed by Minehane’s comments that she felt compelled to weigh in, telling Boston.com that the radio personality was way out of bounds his criticisms.

“I think that’s pretty unacceptable in this day and age,’’ she said. “Here’s a professional woman, doing her job, obviously we can all be criticized for what we do but we should be able to do it without those kind of disgusting, uncalled for, and frankly outrageous comments.

“It just seems to me that this is not the first time that people on that show have been insensitive and frankly out of line in terms of comments they’ve made. Everybody understands fair criticism, but when it becomes personal, when it’s demeaning, and when it goes over the line as this did, that language is inexcusable and it’s offensive.’’ See more of Coakley’s comments here.

UPDATE 8:51 p.m. — Minihane released a statement apologizing for his comments on Andrews.

“This morning on the radio I used a series of words to describe Erin Andrews’ work at the All-Star Game. My choice of words was wrong; I was wrong to have used them. To all whom I offended — particularly Ms. Andrews — I apologize. There is no place for what was said. It was immature and completely uncalled for. I am often critical of media members and their work and recognize here that I’ve made the kind of mistake I would call out if it was done by another sportscaster or writer. Again, to all involved, I’m very sorry.’’
