Yoenis Cespedes ‘Excited’ To Play Alongside David Ortiz

The ‘La Potencia’ Era is set to begin at Fenway Park when newly-acquired Red Sox outfielder Yoenis Cespedes is expected to arrive in Boston for the weekend series against the Yankees.

He’ll wear No. 52 and is expected to be in right field, where his powerful arm can be taken advantage of, especially at Fenway.

“It will be something new, with new coaches and new teammates, and I think that is always the hardest,” Cespedes said in translated comments from his conversation with Marly Rivera from ESPNDeportes.com Thursday.

The 28-year-old Cuban native is expected to provide the righthanded power in the middle of the order that the Red Sox have been sorely lacking this season. Paired with slugger David Ortiz, this could be a power-hitting combo Red Sox fans haven’t seen since Manny You-Know-Who was shipped out of town.

Cespedes says he knows Ortiz well, and looks forward to playing alongside the Red Sox DH as well playing under skipper John Farrell.

“I had the opportunity to work with manager John Farrell during the All-Star game,” Cespedes told Rivera. “So at least I already have some experience with him and I know well and have always greatly admired David Ortiz.”

Fans sitting on top of the Green Monster will no doubt be looking for Cespedes to display his righthanded pop and crush some balls over the wall in left field in the final two months of the season.

The rap on Cespedes is that he may be too aggressive at the plate, but the two-time Home Run Derby champion is aware of the power he possesses and what it takes for him to drive the ball.

“I’m somebody who’s very conscious of the power that I have,” Cespedes said through a translator at the Derby in Minneapolis in July. “So I don’t need to put more of a swing or more of an effort in order to hit a home run. I just have to look for a good pitch and put a good swing on it and it usually takes care of itself.”

If Cespedes arrives at Fenway in time, the Fenway Faithful will get a chance to see him swing in a Red Sox uniform for the first time tonight against the Bronx Bombers.
