The Red Sox had a slightly depressing end to their season, but David Ortiz was all sorts of cheery with the kids at Mass General Hospital for Children on Thursday afternoon.
In good ol’ David Ortiz fashion, he stopped by the hospital to “check up on [his] buddies.’’ He also saw his recently dedicated David Ortiz Children’s Fund Pediatric Examining Room for the first time and presented the hospital with a nice $100,000 check from the David Ortiz Children’s Fund.
“It’s not a secret for anyone that I’m crazy about children,’’ Ortiz said. “It’s the best thing to ever happen to any one of us, to have kids around and make sure that their childhood is built up the right way.’’
Ortiz told one patient, Logan Pearson, 13, when he dropped in that he, too, stays focused by watching cartoons. (Who doesn’t?) He gave Pearson a high-five for his Patriots jersey. The nurse was ecstatic, saying it was the first time she’d seen Pearson smile all day.
“I always look at things on the positive side,’’ Ortiz said. “Through the years, I’ve seen kids in so much pain, coming in or out or surgery, and the minute they see me they forget about the pain for a bit.’’
He added: “That’s important for me.’’
