Who the Red Sox gave up to get Chris Sale

Four prospects head to Chicago in exchange for the ace.

For the cost of four prospects, the Red Sox acquired All-Star pitcher Chris Sale on Tuesday. The momentous trade is already being analyzed by Boston fans, curious about Sale’s potential to help bring another World Series to Yawkey Way.

Regarding the prospects traded to the White Sox, they are touted talents but still relatively unknown quantities in comparison to Sale, a top-five finisher in American League Cy Young voting in each of the last four seasons. Here’s a quick overview of the players traded in exchange for the 27-year-old ace:

Victor Diaz, Right-handed pitcher

  • 22-years-old
  • Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Month for August/September in 2016
  • Went 2-5 with 10 saves and a 3.88 ERA for Single-A Greenville in 2016 season
  • Born in Dominican Republic, signed as an international free agent in 2014

Michael Kopech, Right-handed pitcher

  • 20-years-old
  • Ranked No. 4 Red Sox prospect by Baseball America
  • Went 4-1 with a 2.08 ERA, 86 strikeouts in 56.1 innings pitched in combined 2016 minor league season (High-A Salem and Short-A Lowell)
  • Hit 105 miles per hour on the radar gun with his fastball in July, 2016
  • Born in Texas, selected in the first round (33rd overall) by the Red Sox in the 2014 MLB draft

Yoan Moncada, Infielder

  • 21-years-old
  • Named the 2016 Minor League Player of the Year by Baseball America
  • Hit .294 with 31 doubles, six triples, 15 home runs, 62 RBI and 45 stolen bases in combined 2016 minor league season (High-A Salem and Double-A Portland)
  • Won MVP of 2016 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game at Petco Park
  • Born in Cuba, signed with Red Sox as an international free agent in 2015
