Steven Wright spent the last few days weighing his options, getting second and third opinions, regarding the torn cartilage in his left knee. Wright could have continued going to the mound for the Red Sox, knowing surgery awaited someday. But Wright decided to have the procedure, calling an end to his season and getting started on preparing for next season.
“It’s definitely frustrating knowing it’s the beginning of the season and my season’s over,” Wright said before the Red Sox played Orioles on Thursday. “It’s one of those things, we tried to do whatever we could to get through it, and it just got to the point where it was just unbearable.”
Wright, who will undergo cartilage restoration surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, said he has had several sleepless nights but seemed optimistic about his decision.
