A late change in the Red Sox’ lineup places catcher Christian Vázquez at second base Monday.

The Red Sox are scheduled to play their annual Patriots’ Day game at 11:05 a.m. Monday against the Baltimore Orioles amid wet conditions at Fenway Park.

On Monday morning, the Red Sox announced their lineup for the game, only to amend it an hour later.

The changes? Dustin Pedroia was optioned as the designated hitter for Monday’s game rather than making the start at second base. Vázquez will start at second base for the first time in his major league career, according to Baseball Reference. Vázquez has appeared at third base four times for the Red Sox, twice in 2017 and twice more last season. He also played six innings at first base during Game 3 of the 2018 World Series.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said before Monday’s game that Vázquez has been taking ground balls across the infield positions during practices recently.

“[Vázquez] played first base in the World Series, so that’s the biggest stage in this sport,” Cora told reporters via NESN. “The first play he made was a step back, game on the line, a flip to first. He wants to do it, he likes to do it, and we’re going with him.”

Cora also noted that the lineup change is intended to keep Dustin Pedroia’s workload light early on this season.

“We have to take care of [Pedroia],” Cora said. “We have a program. We have to be disciplined. We were pushing him to play second but then it doesn’t make sense, you know? Something happens today with him and then it’s on us, so. The only thing we can do, honestly, is DH him and keep him off his feet as much as possible. Not push him so hard, y’know? It’s a tough start. It’s tough conditions.”

J.D. Martinez will play right field Monday and Steve Pearce will start in left field after Andrew Benintendi left Sunday’s game with an injury. Mookie Betts will make a rare start in center field in replacement for a reportedly sick Jackie Bradley Jr.

Hector Velázquez (0-0, 2.79 ERA) will start at pitcher for the Red Sox.
