The Red Sox Tuesday designated catcher Blake Swihart for assignment, adding catcher Sandy Léon and right-handed pitcher Erasmo Ramirez to the active roster.

Swihart has appeared in 12 games for the Sox this season, going 4 for 26 with a double, a home run, and seven strikeouts. He slashed .231/.310/.385. The Red Sox selected Swihart in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft, 26th overall.

Leon, who was outrighted off the 40-man roster in late March and accepted an assignment to Pawtucket, will be recalled to fill the void and catch Chris Sale at Yankee Stadium Tuesday night. Leon was Sale’s only catcher last season.

This is the second time the Sox have walked away from Swihart as a catcher this early in a season. Christian Vazquez, who played second base against the Orioles on Monday, is the other catcher on the Sox’ active roster.
