Back home

Always nice to return home to the Bruins Blog after a few weeks away. KPD, thanks for popping in to the blog and watering the plants, taking in the mail, feeding the cats, etc.

Looks like it’s been a quiet last couple weeks, with the biggest news being the Islanders hiring Scott Gordon. GM Garth Snow proved he’s no dummy with the hire. Gordon is the perfect fit for the Island — bright, confident, and hard-working, with a track record of developing talent and getting guys to buy in to his system. Perhaps the only question might have been whether Gordon, considering the reconstruction required on the Island, would have waited for a more big-time gig to open up while serving out his final year in Providence.

Also no surprise that Rob Murray, Gordon’s right-hand man, will be the man in Providence. Had Gordon been free to choose his assistants, he certainly would have considered bringing Murray to New York. But Gerard Gallant, John Chabot, and Dan Lacroix were retained after Snow fired Ted Nolan, leaving Murray in place to take over the P-Bruins. Whenever Providence players were asked about Gordon, they made sure to mention Murray as being a significant presence, signaling his value to the organization.

Other thoughts:

* Former P-Bruins Andy Hilbert, Ben Walter, Sean Bentivoglio, and Brett Skinner, who all played for Gordon, are in the Islanders system. This might be Walter’s best shot at making the big-league roster out of camp.

* For all the puckheads that pencilled Carl Soderberg into the 2008-09 lineup as a top-six wing, perhaps it would be a good thing to wait until the forward is on US soil first.

* KPD learned that Joe Colborne has gained 10 pounds since July’s development camp, which the youngster believed was a significant achievement. On the Shinzawa diet, that would have taken all of two days.

* Am sketching out some possibilities to try in this space this year, with options being slide shows, off-ice profiles, more national links, and some other tidbits. If there’s stuff you’d like to see here, please let your thoughts be known. Always looking for feedback on what you guys want in terms of coverage.
