Bruins at Leafs game updates

TORONTO — The Bruins, missing their top playmaker in Marc Savard and shutdown defenseman in Zdeno Chara last night at the Air Canada Centre, found themselves in an expected dogfight against the last-place Maple Leafs.

After third-period goals by Patrice Bergeron and Luca Caputi sent the game into overtime, Nikolai Kulemin beat Tim Thomas with 49.7 seconds remaining in OT, handing the Bruins a 4-3 loss. Thomas was taken out by Michael Ryder on the play.s

The Bruins snapped a 1-1 tie in the second period with a five-on-three power-play goal. As Jeff Finger (holding) and Luke Schenn (delay of game) watched from the penalty box, Dennis Wideman hammered a slap shot on goal that was tipped by Mark Recchi. The puck skittered to the right of the net for Marco Sturm. With Jonas Gustavsson out of position, Sturm banked the puck into the net at 13:49 of the second.

But with 1:22 remaining in the second, the Leafs scored the game-tying goal. After Mark Stuart lost a puck battle to Nikolai Kulemin, Carl Gunnarson had the puck at the right point. Thomas, fighting through a Wideman screen, didn’t get a look at Gunnarson’s shot until the puck was behind him, making it a 2-2 game.

The Bruins opened the scoring at 2:47 of the first period. After Gustavsson saw a Dennis Seidenberg point shot thud off his glove, Recchi pounced on the rebound and found the back of the net to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.

Halfway through the second period, Toronto tied the score. Milan Lucic held the puck in the offensive zone, but he lost control to Luke Schenn, who started the rush the other way with an up-the-middle pass to Wayne Primeau. The former Bruin powered through Matt Hunwick to start a partial breakaway on Thomas. With a quick flick., Primeau snapped a wrister through Thomas’s pads at 10:34.
