Final: Bruins 4, Devils 1

NEWARK — In tonight’s first period at the Prudential Center, when his teammates flubbed pucks, misfired on breakouts, and wilted under New Jersey’s forecheck, Tim Thomas stood tall, turning aside all 11 pucks that the Devils sent his way.

In the second period, Thomas’s teammates paid him back.

New Jersey got on the scoreboard first when Dainius Zubrus tapped home a short-range rebound at 3:45 of the second, aided by Zach Parise’s presence in Thomas’s face.

But the Bruins responded with four second-period strikes on Martin Brodeur, with all four lines participating in the rout. The Bruins recorded a 4-1 win, improving to 2-1-0.

Jordan Caron kicked off the outburst by scoring his first NHL goal. Blake Wheeler started the play by pulling up at the offensive blue line and finding a trailing Zdeno Chara. Brodeur stopped Chara’s shot, but on the following flurry, after the netminder turned aside Johnny Boychuk’s bid, Caron was open in the slot to rap the rebound in at 5:38. Patrice Bergeron collected the puck for safekeeping.

Fellow rookie Tyler Seguin helped give the Bruins a one-goal edge. Seguin, from the left-side wall, turned and fired a pass to an in-stride Michael Ryder, who responded by sniping a top-shelf goal over Brodeur at 10:44 of the second.

The fourth line jumped into the action later in the second. From behind the net, Gregory Campbell went against the grain to find Shawn Thornton at the right circle. With Brodeur out of position, Thornton whipped a shot under the crossbar at 16:43. Milan Lucic capped the period by driving to the net, taking a feed from David Krejci, and tapping the puck past Brodeur at 18:09.

9:00 3d period: Bruins 4-1
Rink half-empty in Newark. Surprised this many people sticking around.

0:00 3d period: Bruins 4-1
Martin Brodeur in the crease to start the third.

20:00 2d period: Bruins 4-1
Dominant second period for the Bruins. Skill all around. Goals from all four lines. Would be surprised to see Martin Brodeur start the third.

19:31 2d period: Bruins 4-1
No goal for Adam Mair, sez video review.

18:09 2d period: Bruins 4-1
David Krejci from the right corner spots Milan Lucic driving to the net. Easy tap-in for Lucic. Martin Brodeur getting zero help. Might be given a breather for the third. Lots of boos here in Newark.

16:43 2d period: Bruins 3-1
Skilled stuff from the fourth line. Gregory Campbell, from behind the net, goes against the grain and sends a pass out to Shawn Thornton at the right circle. Thornton goes top shelf on Martin Brodeur.

13:36 2d period: Bruins 2-1
Heavy shift by Patrice Bergeron’s line. Putting loads of pressure on Martin Brodeur, who bails out his teammates with several sharp stops.

10:44 2d period: Bruins 2-1
From the left-side wall, Tyler Seguin turns and connects with an in-stride Michael Ryder in the slot. Ryder snipes a shot over Martin Brodeur. Sweet stuff on both ends.

Travis Zajac whistles a shot off the left post. No goal.

5:38 2d period: 1-1
Jordan Caron scores his first NHL goal, as he bangs in a rebound past Martin Brodeur. Patrice Bergeron retrieves the puck. All starts with a clever play by Blake Wheeler to find Zdeno Chara in front. Wheeler playing a strong game so far.

3:45 2d period: Devils 1-0
Tim Thomas makes the first stop. But with Zach Parise in his face and the Bruis unable to clear the puck, Dainius Zubrus pokes home the rebound. Not Thomas’s fault.

0:35 2d period: 0-0
Save of the night by Tim Thomas, stretching out the right pad to foil Ilya Kovalchuk on the backhand.

20:00 1st period: 0-0
The three-man PK and Tim Thomas stand strong to complete the first. Sticks looking like noodles for both sides, with one-pieces breaking all over the place. Marchand had a good first period prior to his kneeing, but can’t be taking those penalties when shorthanded. Jamie Langenbrunner gave Marchand a few slashes after the penalty. (UPDATE: The one replay shown here at the rink doesn’t look like much of a knee by Marchand.)

18:42 1st period: 0-0
Already shorthanded, Brad Marchand puts his team down two men by kneeing Dainius Zubrus.

18:02 1st period: 0-0
More electric stuff from Tim Thomas, first stopping Matt Taormina’s long-distance shot, then turning aside Jason Arnott.

16:37 1st period: 0-0
Solid work by Tim Thomas to keep Jacob Josefson and the NJ PP off the board. Good scoring chance for David Krejci and Blake Wheeler on the kill.

11:33 1st period: 0-0
Ragged play by the Bruins so far. Having trouble with NJ’s forecheck.

1:00 1st period: 0-0
Dainius Zubrus skating with Travis Zajac and Zach Parise.

0:00 1st period: 0-0
Daniel Paille, Brian McGrattan, and Adam McQuaid are the healthy scratches. The Devils will be without Mark Fraser, Anton Volchenkov, Brian Rolston, and Bryce Salvador. They are not healthy.
