OTTAWA — Tim Thomas, who won his sixth straight game tonight, may not just be the best goalie in the NHL. Through six appearances, Thomas has been the league’s best player.
Thomas tied Tiny Thompson’s record from 1937-38 for best start for a Black-and-Gold goalie. Thomas stopped every shot he saw in a 4-0 win over the Senators at Scotiabank Place. Thomas now has three shutouts this season.
The Bruins, up by one goal after 20 minutes, put two more pucks behind Brian Elliott in the second period. The Bruins doubled their lead with a power-play marker at 13:55 of the second when Tyler Seguin scored his second goal in the last two games. The play started with Mark Recchi carrying the puck with speed down the left wing. As the Senators backed in toward their net, Recchi spotted Seguin streaking backdoor. The 42-year-old hit the 18-year-old with a crisp pass, and Seguin had an easy tap-in to make it a 2-0 game.
The Bruins got their third goal when Milan Lucic put a breakaway shot behind Elliott. Earlier in the shift, Elliott turned aside Nathan Horton on his own breakaway opportunity.
Earlier in the second, the Senators appeared to tie the game at 1-1 at 7:27. After Thomas kicked out a Nick Foligno shot, Daniel Alfredsson banked in the rebound. But the goal was waved off because Mike Fisher had interfered with Thomas in the crease.
The Bruins struck first after a defensive-zone misplay by veterans Chris Phillips and Fisher. Phillips, Ottawa’s shutdown defenseman, rolled out from behind his net and tried to connect with Fisher. But the pass never arrived on Fisher’s stick. David Krejci picked off the pass and flicked a wrist shot past a helpless Elliott at 4:32 of the first period.
The Senators had plenty of scoring chances in the first. Their best rush came after Alex Kovalev picked off a Dennis Seidenberg clearing pass. But with Tim Thomas holding the fort, Kovalev and his linemates couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity.
17:53 3d period: Bruins 4-0
Dennis Seidenberg vs. Chris Neil. Blood leaking from the side of Seidenberg’s forehead.
12:52 3d period: Bruins 4-0
Habs fans here starting Ole chant. Little resistance from Sens followers.
9:03 3d period: Bruins 4-0
Rout City. Patrice Bergeron springs Jordan Caron for a breakaway. Caron tucks the puck behind Brian Elliott.
20:00 2d period: Bruins 3-0
Good bet that Cory Clouston gives his team an earful after allowing two breakaways on the same shift. At the other end, what will it take for a team to beat Tim Thomas? Also, where was Alex Kovalev in the second? Some things are too easy to predict.
18:24 2d period: Bruins 3-0
Milan Lucic scores on the breakaway. Earlier during the shift, Brian Elliott had stoned Nathan Horton on his own breakaway.
15:35 2d period: Bruins 2-0
Matt Hunwick cranks a wrister off the left post.
13:55 2d period: Bruins 2-0
PPG for Tyler Seguin. Mark Recchi carries down the left wing with speed and spots Seguin at the far post. Easy tap-in for Seguin.
7:27 2d period: Bruins 1-0
Daniel Alfredsson scores on the rebound after a Nick Foligno shot. But Mike Fisher interferes with Tim Thomas. No goal.

Mark Recchi now with Patrice Bergeron. The flip-flop continues.
4:00 2d period: Bruins 1-0
Blake Wheeler back with Patrice Bergeron and Jordan Caron.
20:00 1st period: Bruins 1-0
Entertaining 20 minutes. Alex Kovalev bringing the good stuff so far. Of course, that probably means he’ll pack it in for the final 40. Very strong period by the fourth line.
17:06 1st period: Bruins 1-0
Heck of a stop by Brian Elliott on Blake Wheeler’s goalmouth bid. Wheeler to the box for a late slash on Elliott.
10:53 1st period: Bruins 1-0
Jarkko Ruutu strikes again. As Ruutu went for a change, it looked like he held onto Gregory Campbell’s stick. Campbell cuffs Ruutu and is sent to the box. Worst kind of bush-league garbage.
9:59 1st period: Bruins 1-0
Tweaks the last two shifts. Mark Recchi with Patrice Bergeron and Jordan Caron. Blake Wheeler riding with Tyler Seguin and Michael Ryder.
8:55 1st period: Bruins 1-0
Careless puck management by the Bruins in their own zone. Lucky not to have been burned.
5:20 1st period: Bruins 1-0
Glorious chances for Alex Kovalev after a Dennis Seidenberg turnover. Hard to explain how the puck stayed out. When he wants to play, Kovalev is as skilled as anyone in the league.
4:32 1st period: Bruins 1-0
After a defensive-zone turnover by Chris Phillips, David Krejci whistles a shot past Brian Elliott. Looked like Phillips was trying to connect with Mike Fisher.
3:28 1st period: 0-0
Good backhand chance for Brad Marchand.
1:45 1st period: 0-0
Very strange not to see Chris Phillips paired with Anton Volchenkov. They had been a shutdown fixture forever.
0:00 1st period: 0-0
Daniel Paille is the healthy scratch.
