Bruins shut down Panthers, 4-0

It’s a final here – the Bruins have beaten the Florida Panthers, 4-0, at TD Garden. Milan Lucic had a natural hat trick and Shawn Thornton added a goal during the Bruins’ three-goal flurry in the third period. Netminder Tuukka Rask earned his first victory of the season (1-4-1) and his seventh career shutout.

Third period
16:06 – Boston 4, Florida 0 – Shawn Thornton fired a shot from the left circle that ricocheted off two Panthers’ players, the second of whom was Shawn Matthias in front and Tomas Vokoun had no chance to stop it.

14:57 – Boston 3, Florida 0 – Milan Lucic potted his second goal in 15 seconds, earning a natural hat trick to put the Bruins in complete command. It was the 10th goal of the season for Lucic and his second career hat trick.

14:42 – Boston 2, Florida 0 – Milan Lucic got his second goal of the game, snapping a shot over the glove of Tomas Vokoun from the right circle.

14:00 – Brad Marchand nearly gave Boston an insurance goal when he redirected a blast from the point by defenseman Matt Hunwick but goalie Tomas Vokoun was there for the save.

7:08 – A very eventful series of events with both teams having opportunities during the Bruins power play. Chris Higgins and Bryan Allen both had shorthanded chances for the Panthers and the Bruins put pressure on Tomas Vokoun with rookie Tyler Seguin buzzing the net.

5:08 – Florida’s Cory Stillman whistled off for interference. Bruins are on the power play.

2:27 – Florida fails to land a shot on net as the Bruins successfully kill the penalty to Zdeno Chara.

0:27 – Bruins captain has been whistled off for tripping Stephen Weiss. The Panthers go on the power play.

Second period

16:05 – Some good offensive opportunities for the Bruins, who have put together a couple of good shifts back to back. Gregory Campbell had a couple of bids, one of which was a spinning move during which he put a backhander on Tomas Vokoun.

11:08 – Bruins can’t generate enough against Tomas Vokoun during the man advantage.

9:08 – Florida captain Bryan McCabe is in the box for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Bruins are going on their first power play of the game.

5:47 – The Bruins killed off another penalty but they are tempting fate. Panthers’ forward David Booth has been buzzing the Boston zone all game.

3:47 – Patrice Bergeron’s hooking penalty has the Bruins shorthanded again.

1:23 – Mark Recchi has been called for interference. The Panthers are on the power play again.

First period
18:13 – Bruins’ Blake Wheeler has been whistled off for high sticking. Panthers are on the power play.

16:31- Shawn Thornton and Darcy Hordichuk have dropped the gloves. Both players got in blows and it energized the crowd at TD Garden.

15:37 – Boston 1, Florida 0 – Milan Lucic has put the Bruins on top. Lucic drove through the neutral zone and dropped a pass to Nathan Horton. Horton gave Lucic back the puck in the right circle and Lucic ripped a shot over Vokoun.

12:37 – The Panthers had a great scoring chance with Rostislav Olesz dishing a pass from the right circle to David Booth, who was bombing down the slot. But Tuukka Rask is there.

10:52 – Both teams looked a little scattered in the first half of the period, which isn’t surprising given that both teams played on Wednesday night and then traveled. The Panthers have had a couple of decent scoring chances including one that hit the post. Bruins’ center Patrice Bergeron seems to have plenty of energy though.

5:59 – Panthers have two shots on net during the man advantage but both were challenging for Tuukka Rask, who held the fort.

0:00 – Defenseman Johnny Boychuk is back in the lineup and goaltender Tuukka Rask is looking for his first victory of the season.
