Sabres edge Bruins, 7-6, in shootout


Sabres score three times in shootout for 7-6 victory on crazy night at HSBC. Bruins lose in shootout for second straight game.

Stafford, Vanek and Ennis connect in extra time. Ryder and Seguin counter along way for Bruins, but Chara fails on short wrister as the sixth shooter, firing wide on Ryan Miller.

Elias Sports Bureau confirms tonight first in Bruins history with four defensemen scoring.


Some suspensful back-and-forth action, but 5:00 OT ends with it still knotted. Headed to shootout.

Bruins have five, maybe six skaters on ice around the 1:00 mark. No call. Break for B’s.

Sabres 6, Bruins 6, 19:32 — Stafford sweeps in backhander for hat trick and equalizer. Miller pulled for extra attacker.

Bruins with 10-2 shot lead for period with 2:00 to play.

7:00 to go, Bruins still with one-goal lead.

Bruins 6, Sabres 5, 7:06 — Kid Kampfer rushes down slot at even strength and knocks in clever centering feed by speedy Seguin. Four of Boston’s six goals scored tonight by blue liners.

Bruins with 8-0 shot lead in third. Showing impressive energy.

Boston 5, Sabres 5, 3:08 — Seguin rips home one-timer from right wing circle off good dish from Paille.

Julien has put Ryder on right wing with Lucic and Savard.

Play underway here in final 20:00 or regulation.


Flatfooted Bruins head to room for second intermission, trailing on board, 5-4. Good, good, good vibrations no longer vibrating.

Sabres 5, Bruins 4, 17:43 — Pominville cannon from top of right circle, following faceoff win, gives Sabres first lead of night. Puck deflects in off of Seidenberg in front.

17:12 — Boychuk sent off, minor penalty. Important kill for Bruins.

Good shift by Lucic-Savard-Horton trio. Near goal as Savard dishes out to Horton at left post. Still 4-4 with 4:00 to go.

Sabres 4, Bruins 4, 6:17 — Stafford nails slapper by Thomas on short side, firing from right wing circle. Bad start to new year for Spoked-B. Tough to blow two-goal leads. Boston has scored more than four goals in only four games this season.


Tim Thomas in Boston net to start second period. Rask stopped 13 of 16 shots across the opening 20:00.

Boychuk is on the ice.


First-period barn-burner in the books. Bruins clinging to 4-3 lead. Boychuk heads to room in final moments of period, limping noticeably after blocking a Sabre shot. Not sure if he’ll return for second period.

Bruins 4, Sabres 3 — With 40.1 seconds to go in period, Stafford jams puck in at base of right post. Ference should have eliminated Sabres nuisance. Rask objects that play should have been whistled dead. Refs with deaf ears to match blind eyes.

Bruins 4, Sabres 2 — Chara knocks in shorthander off of 2-on-1 rush with Bergeron, Myers the lone Sabre back. Looks as if Sabres had one heckuva New Year’s eve.

Bruins 3, Buffalo 2, 13:45 — Vanek tucks backhander in from deep in slot. Boston bench objects that Vanek should have been whistled off for a trip on Ference moments before he made goal-scoring shot.

Bruins on fire. Buffalo FD might have to be put on alert. Sabres stalwart Ryan Miller taking a Hockey-Night-in-Boston-like beating.

Boston, 3-1, 5:36 — Boychuk drills in heavy slapper from above right circle after Bergeron wins draw to Miller’s left. Recchi with screen in front.

Both clubs scoring as if this is just another game in the World Junior Championship. Is this really a Boston-Buffalo tilt?

Boston, 2-1 — Seidenberg puts Bruins back on top with shot from outside edge of the left wing faceoff circle. Shot deflects in off Niedermayer.

Buffalo, 1-1 — Only 2:06 gone, Pominville taps in equalizer while on one knee at top of crease.


Boston, 1-0 — Less han two minutes into the action, Ference drives in 1-0 lead with one-timer from slot point. Savard starts play with win at faceoff dot, puling puck to McQuaid.

The late Jim Kelley, the former Buffalo News hockey beat guy and columnist, was enshrined in the Sabres Hall of Fame in a pre-game on-ice ceremony.

Alex Mogilny, aka Alexander the Great, also entered the club’s Hall of Fame.
