MONTREAL — The Bruins, up 2-0 in the third period tonight at the Bell Centre, saw the Canadiens scored two late goals to tie the game.
Scott Gomez scored Montreal’s first goal at 17:38 of the third. Gomez’s shot deflected off Andrew Ference, then appeared to hit traffic once again before sliding past Tim Thomas. With 47.7 seconds remaining, James Wisniewski’s point shot hit off Brian Gionta’s left skate and squirted into the net.
At 3:43 of overtime, Max Pacioretty ripped a shot over Thomas to give the Canadiens a 3-2 OT win.
“I thought we played a really good game until we took that bad penalty in the third,” said coach Claude Julien. “We gave up a bad goal, and from there on in, we took another bad penalty in overtime. We shot ourselves in the foot. Those are individual mistakes and things that end up costing you. This is where we’ve got to get better. It’s not acceptable that you play so well all night, then those kinds of things come back to cost you a hockey game.”
The Canadiens had a goal waved off in the third. Mathieu Darche believed he had scored Montreal’s first goal after he batted in the rebound of a James Wisniewski shot. But referee Kevin Pollock ruled that Darche had hit the puck with a high stick. Video review confirmed Pollock’s call.
Patrice Bergeron gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead in the second with his first of two goals. Brad Marchand got the puck to Blake Wheeler on the left wing. As Bergeron drove to the net, Wheeler wasted little time getting the puck off his stick and onto the blade of his center. With Carey Price leaning the wrong way, Bergeron had an easy tap-in at 4:18.
Bergeron doubled the Bruins’ lead at 12:27 of the second. As Mark Recchi battled Alexandre Picard in front of Price, Zdeno Chara wound up one of his signature slappers. The puck never got through, but as Picard battled with Recchi, Bergeron flew in and beat Price with a close-range shot to give the Bruins a 2-0 edge.
Tempers flared between Marchand and Scott Gomez halfway through the second. Gomez didn’t like how Marchand drove him into the end boards. Gomez retaliated with a slash on Marchand’s right foot. No penalties were called.
Neither team scored in the first period, although both goalies had to make sharp saves. At 9:44, Price squared himself up to Brad Marchand to stuff the winger’s close-range bid. Then at 12:57, after Michael Ryder dropped a pass to Steven Kampfer, Price flashed his glove to snatch the defenseman’s fast-moving shot.
At 18:47, following a pileup in front of Thomas, Adam McQuaid squared off with Travis Moen. McQuaid landed a series of left jabs while grabbing Moen’s jersey. With neither man going down and fatigue setting in, the linesmen busted up the scrap.
