Final: Bruins 4, Penguins 2

PITTSBURGH — With three third-period goals last night at the Consol Energy Center, the Bruins wiped out a 2-0 deficit and grabbed a 4-2 come-from-behind victory ovr the Penguins.

Zdeno Chara, Brad Marchand, Mark Recchi, and Gregory Campbell scored in the third. Chara and Recchi scored on the power play. The Bruins had gone scoreless on the power play in the last five games.

“I thought going into the third, the attitude in here and the emotions in the locker room were really positive,” Chara said. “We all believed that we could come back. That’s what we did. We were just focusing on getting the first one. Then getting the second one right away in such a short span of time was huge to tie the game.”

After a scoreless first period, Pittsburgh struck twice in the second period. The Penguins’ first goal came on a regrettable misplay by Tuukka Rask. Grunt forward Michael Rupp carried the puck down the right wing, blowing past rookie Matt Bartkowski. From a sharp angle, Rupp tossed a backhander on goal. Rask should have been square to Rupp’s shot and blocked it without issues. Instead, an off-balance Rask lunged for the puck, which squirted under his left armpit and into the net at 11:39.

After Mark Recchi was whistled for tripping, the Penguins scored a power-play goal to double their lead. First, Evgeni Malkin, from deep in the right corner, spotted Kris Letang open at the left point. As Letang wound up for a one-timer, Chris Kunitz cut in front of Rask to take away the goalie’s vision. With Kunitz in his face, Rask could do nothing to stop Letang’s one-timer from picking the top corner over his glove at 15:12.

Later in the second, Recchi was called for hooking Jordan Staal in the neutral zone. Recchi was hit with an extra unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, giving the Penguins a four-minute power play. But Alex Goligoski wiped out part of the four-minute man-advantage when he was called for interference.

Marc-Andre Fleury didn’t face any sustained pressure. Fleury made his best save when he stopped Gregory Campbell’s redirect of a Zdeno Chara shot.
