Game 58: Bruins at Islanders

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Hello again, this time for Nassau Coliseum, the threadbare home of the Islanders who today rank only above the the bottom-feeding Senators and Oilers in the NHL’s overall standings.

The Bruins, losers of their last three games, will not have the services of new centerman Chris Kelly, obtained Tuesday night from Ottawa for a second-round draft pick. Kelly remains in Ottawa as he attempts to clean up visa issues that would allow him to enter the US and suit up for the Spoked-B.

Kelly, who will wear No. 23 (where are you, Craig Janney?), will be in uniform and play tomorrow night when the Bruins take on the falling-like-a-rock Senators at Scotiabank Place.

Storylines: The Bruins conducted an optional skate this morning and Tuukka Rask was the only goaltender in residence. That likely means he will get the start here, but that’s no guarantee, especially given the club’s three straight losses..It will be interesting to see if Zdeno Chara and Mark Recchi will remain the point men on the No. 1 power-play unit. They each averaged about 1:30 back there for four power plays on Tuesday vs. Toronto and neither one of the factored in a goal….Those who didn’t skate this morning: Shawn Thornton, Michael Ryder, Ference, Chara, Recchi and Rask. Very rarely does Chara skip even an optional workout. ‘’Yes,’’ said a playful Chara, sticking an index firmly in an aged reporter’s chest as the towering defenseman imitated coach Claude Julien’s orders, ‘’it was one of these (pressing firmer with his finger), ‘You are not skating….it’s optional, but you are not skating.’’’…Rumors persist that the Bruins are about to close a deal on Leafs defenseman Tomas Francisco Franco Kaberle. But no official word. Hunch here remains that the deal will get done, possibly with Blake Wheeler dished to a club other than Toronto to make room for Kaberle’s salary.
