CALGARY — Tonight at Scotiabank Saddledome, the Bruins kicked off their three-game Western Canada swing with a 3-1 win against the Flames.

Milan Lucic scored the only goal of the first two periods. Just 59 seconds into the night, the Bruins grabbed a 1-0 lead. Adam McQuaid, paired with Zdeno Chara to start the game, initiated the scoring sequence with a sharp pass over the offensive blue line to David Krejci. As Krejci stickhandled down the right wing, Milan Lucic got his legs pumping and roared toward the net. Krejci faked a shot, which opened up Miikka Kiprusoff. With the Calgary goalie biting on Krejci’s fake, the center slid a cross-crease dish to Lucic. The left wing had little trouble tapping in Krejci’s feed at 0:59 for the game’s opening goal.

At 5:55 of the third period, Brad Marchand doubled his team’s lead. After Andrew Ference winged a shot on goal that was blocked in front, the puck caromed to Marchand near the right circle. With Kiprusoff out of position, Marchand swept in the rebound for his 19th goal of the season.

Calgary got back into it in the third period after a late slashing call on Patrice Bergeron. Jarome Iginla slid a backhand pass across the crease to Curtis Glencross, who beat Tim Thomas at 17:27 to cut Boston’s lead to one goal.

But Lucic scored an empty-net goal at 19:13 to seal the win.

Thomas, given a rare two-game breather (Tuukka Rask made back-to-back starts against the Islanders and Senators last Thursday and Friday), looked sharp through 60 minutes. Thomas stopped all of Calgary’s 22 shots. Thomas stood tall and square to Calgary’s shooters. When necessary, Thomas pulled out the acrobatics to turn back Calgary’s in-close chances.

“My legs definitely felt fresher than they had in a little while,” Thomas said. “I think that decision paid off for both of us.”
