Bruins to start preseason tonight against Senators

The Bruins will be arriving in Canada’s capital this afternoon to open the preseason tonight against the Senators.

The roster for tonight’s game, with possible lines and pairings, is below. Some things to track:

* The fight for a third-line job. Right now, early in camp, three players are bidding for one spot: Benoit Pouliot, Chris Clark, and Jordan Caron. Pouliot has the most offensive touch of the three. Clark has the veteran presence and defensive awareness coach Claude Julien likes. Caron has been one of the best performers in camp so far. He can be assigned to Providence without clearing waivers, which might be a significant factor.

* How hard Ryan Spooner will push. Of the junior-eligible players, Spooner is the closest to cracking the big-boy roster. If Spooner deserves to be in Boston, he most likely will be the No. 3 center. If that happens, Chris Kelly would be at risk of being moved, which would be a tough call. The Bruins like Kelly’s two-way game and leadership qualities. However, Kelly makes $2.125 million and will be UFA after this year.

* Who will be the No. 7 defenseman. Matt Bartkowski has been very good in camp. Has gotten bigger and remains a strong skater. Steven Kampfer doesn’t have Bartkowski’s physical tools, but he has shown poise with the puck in the past.
