Bruins trade Yury Alexandrov to Islanders

The Bruins have traded Yury Alexandrov to the Islanders for future considerations. The phrase is a polite euphemism for nothing.

Alexandrov was the 37th pick of the 2006 draft. He was one of the club’s two second-round picks. The Bruins had considerably better luck with their later second-round selection, which they used to draft Milan Lucic 50th overall.

Alexandrov played for St. Petersburg SKA and Omsk Avangard of the KHL this season after playing for Providence in 2010-11. The 23-year-old defenseman had fallen on the club’s depth chart and did not figure in the organization’s plans.

Alexandrov becomes the third fringe prospect to head to Long Island in less than a month. On Feb. 27, the Bruins traded Yannick Riendeau and Marc Cantin to the Islanders for Brian Rolston and Mike Mottau.

* Trent Whitfield has been recalled from Providence. Whitfield will serve as the extra forward on the California road trip. Max Sauve has been reassigned to Providence.
