If you caught any of Bruins wing Chris Kelly’s postgame press conference, you might have noticed he was sporting some serious hardware.
The heavy chain with a big lock is the Bruins’ new symbol of team unity, a locker-room reward for the player who was the Bruins star of the game. Kelly scored the game-winning goal in overtime of the Bruins’ 1-0 victory over the Capitals in Game 1 of their playoff series.
Here’s how reporter Julian Benbow described it in his story about Kelly today:
[ Kelly’s ] reward came in the form of neckwear. After the game he wore a thick padlocked chain wrapped around his neck. He explained that, like the throwback jacket that Andrew Ference bought on eBay last season and became sort of an MVP trophy after each postseason win, the necklace was another one of Ference’s ideas.
“Andrew made something that symbolizes the team, the chain, try not to be the weak link,’’ Kelly said. “It’s one of those things that you pass out after a good game. It’s one of those things that’s all in good fun.’’
[Goalie Tim] Thomas said, “He wasn’t the weak link tonight.’’
