Gregory Campbell will play tonight against the Red Wings at the Garden in the Bruins’ first home preseason game, coach Claude Julien confirmed.
“He’s a go,” Julien said. “Feels good. Feels ready.”
Campbell skated this morning with the first group. He said on Wednesday he felt he was ready to play on Thursday.
“I think as I play, I’ll get more comfortable,” Campbell said on Wednesday. “The mental challenge is a big one too, just trying to overcome that. I’m feeling good enough to play. It’s time for me now to move forward and just play.”
Campbell, who broke his leg in the Eastern Conference finals in June, will be without linemate Shawn Thornton, who is not on the roster for tonight’s game. Zdeno Chara is on the roster, meaning the defenseman will get his first action of the preseason. That leaves Patrice Bergeron as the only regular on the Bruins not to see game action so far. He could play as early as Saturday, though that’s not yet assured.
Jarome Iginla will also get a chance to skate in front of the Garden crowd. It will be his first opportunity as a member of the Bruins.
“I’m looking forward to it,” Iginla said. “It’s preseason, I don’t think it’s the same charge as far as atmosphere as it would be the regular season game opening, but still looking forward to it. Once you get into the game there, it’s competitive. You want to play well. You want to win. You want to keep working on things and getting better. First time playing here at home, so preseason or not it’ll be special.”
Interesting note on the goaltending situation: Malcolm Subban, who played well against the Canadiens on Monday, will play the entire game in goal tonight, Julien said.
