BUFFALO — As expected, the Bruins will have Chad Johnson in goal for the first time this season when they play the Sabres Wednesday night. The goalie confirmed that after the morning skate.
The backup to Tuukka Rask has been off for 32 days since playing against Detroit in the preseason, so it’ll be a test for him, even against a Buffalo team that has scored just 12 goals in 10 games, putting it last in the league at just 1.20 goals per game.
But that’s not the reason Johnson is starting, coach Claude Julien said.
“Unfortunately, it may look like it’s us putting Johnson against a weak team, but it’s putting Johnson in against a sitaution where we’re finally playing our first back-to-back games,” Julien said. “And we want him to be there for that.
“So it wouldn’t matter which team it was, he would have been playing. I think it would be wrong to think we’re putting him in there because of the team we’re playing against.”
Johnson, meanwhile, is focused on keeping things simple after having been out for so long.
“Just not overthinking things,” he said. “Just going out and playing.”
