Bruins give Buffalo permission to interview Jim Benning

The Bruins have officially given the Buffalo Sabres permission to interview assistant general manager Jim Benning as a candidate to replace fired Sabres GM Darcy Regier.

Benning, who is on a short list in Buffalo, was one of Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli’s first hires. Before arriving in Boston in 2006, Benning was Buffalo’s director of amateur scouting. He worked in the Buffalo organization for 12 seasons.

The other known candidates are Pittsburgh’s Jason Botterill and Montreal’s Rick Dudley.

Regier and coach Ron Rolston were fired last week. Pat LaFontaine is Buffalo’s new president of hockey operations. Ted Nolan is the interim coach.
