Watch: Nyquist’s speed thwarts Bruins, ends streak

There are plenty of reasons why the Bruins wouldn’t want to see the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL playoffs later this month. On Wednesday, Gustav Nyquist proved why he was one of them.

The Detroit forward scored the game-winner in the Red Wings’ 3-2 victory over the Bruins, but it was the speed he displayed in doing so that had Zdeno Chara and Tuukka Rask look like deer in the headlights. The Montreal Canadiens have proven over the years how their speed can oftentimes neutralize the Bruins’ game plan, and Nyquist showed on Wednesday just how dangerous that aspect of his game can be.

Nyquist now has 12 goals in his last 10 games, a pivotal stretch that has helped the Red Wings nearly assure their playoff status.

The victory gave Detroit a three-point edge on Columbus for the seventh seed in the playoffs, so it’s becoming more likely that the Red Wings wouldn’t be the Bruins’ first-round opponent. Boston is 1-3 against the Eastern Conference’s new member this season.

The loss was the first in regulation on the road since Jan. 9 in Los Angeles, and the first loss in regulation overall since March 1.
