LAS VEGAS–More than anything else, summer league is about playing time. All the participating rookies and veterans want is a chance to get on the court. Coaches and executives want to see what all the upside translates into and what kind of chemistry different combinations bring to the floor.
For that reason, the Celtics’ entry in the Las Vegas summer league will showcase the talents of familiar names and faces with Al Jefferson, Sebastian Telfair, Gerald Green, Dwayne Jones, Ryan Gomes, Allan Ray, Leon Powe and Rajon Rondo logging the significant minutes.
Although Jefferson and Telfair did not participate in the entire practice this afternoon, both are expected to play tomorrow against Dallas. Jefferson did not practice at all, resting his right ankle after rolling it Wednesday. Telfair went through the first part of the workout, then did not participate in the drills and 4-on-4 action at the end.
The Celtics and forward Ndudi Ebi (say that three times fast) went their separate ways before the team traveled to Las Vegas. Technically, Ebi did not make the roster. But it was a mutual parting of the ways as Ebi went to seek more playing time elsewhere.
When the Celtics tipoff tomorrow at noon, they will be one of the last teams to join the competitive fray. The Las Vegas summer league started on Thursday and all but the Celtics, the Pistons and the Clippers will have played at least one game by the today. The Celtics wanted a couple of early off days built into the schedule so they could log more practice time.
