Rivers Rants

When it came to sideline rants against the referees, Doc Rivers was in midseason form Wednesday night in Toronto. He strenuously objected to several calls by the officiating team of Matt Boland, Scott Foster and Jess Kersey.

He thought Sebastian Telfair was tripped when he was called for a foul. He didn’t like a handful of foul calls against Boston. But Rivers doesn’t envy the job referees have when calling a game with fast-paced teams like the Celtics and Raptors.

‘‘I couldn’t have reffed that game because the speed was so great on both ends,’’ said Rivers.

When asked if officiating throughout the regular season would be a problem with the speed at which the Celtics want to play, Rivers added: ‘‘Hopefully in our favor. The refs know before the game if it’s an uptempo team, and they do a pretty good job of being in position.’’…

Rivers would like to seem some cuts to the Celtics 18-man training camp roster made before tomorrow night’s game against the Cavaliers in Manchester, N.H. In addition to the obvious choice of Kevin Pittsnogle, Dwayne Jones and Akin Akingbala could soon be headed home. Jones has the misfortune of suffering from a sore back at the wrong time. Rivers said Jones’ back pain is radiating down his legs and did not have a timetable for his return to action, noting that backs can be ‘‘tricky.’’ It also could be awhile before Ratliff takes the court again also because of a sore back.

If Pittsnogle, Jones and Akingbala are cut and you do the math, there would be room for Michael Olowokandi on the Celtics regular-season roster. There is something to be said for adding a veteran role player, especially if Rivers follows through with his plan to do power forward and center by committee. …

Telfair matched up with Toronto point guard T.J. Ford and then Rajon Rondo taking on the assignment made for some speedy and entertaining showdowns. …

Although he didn’t like the call, hopefully Gerald Green learns his lesson about hanging on the rim following big dunks after being called for a technical. …

Pierce had some fun jawing with a courtside fan, smiling as the two talked some trash. For that matter, Pierce seemed to smile the whole game, whether playing or watching his younger teammates run.
