Jefferson’s back

Al Jefferson returned Wednesday against Charlotte, exactly two weeks after undergoing an appendectomy. The power forward wore protective padding around his midsection. He entered the game with 2 minutes 10 seconds remaining in the first quarter and played solidly throughout the first half. He entered halftime with 6 points in nine minutes.
‘‘I feel real good,’’ said Jefferson. ‘‘There’s no pain and I’m protected, anyway. But I actually didn’t think I was going on this trip. I thought I was just going to get a practice in [Tuesday] and play Friday. I guess they watched how good practice was for me and said I could play. I didn’t argue with them. I was happy. I have no concerns.’’
Delonte West made the trip but did not dress for last night’s game as he nurses a sprained left big toe. While West would like to play Friday against the Knicks, Doc Rivers thinks a return sometime next week would be more reasonable. Rivers expects West to undergo tests on the injured toe.
After three days without a game, the Celtics showed considerable rust on the offensive end, shooting 27 percent (6 for 22) in the first quarter.
