Doc Rivers took a gamble tonight. Unfortunately for the Celtics, it didn’t pay off.
Nursing an eight-point lead to start the fourth quarter, Rivers gambled with a second unit of Delonte West, Tony Allen, Gerald Green, Brian Scalabrine and Al Jefferson. Brian Scalabrine hit two three-pointers during that stretch, and the Nets cut the lead to six before Paul Pierce came in at the 8:40 mark. By the time Sebastian Telfair, Ryan Gomes and Wally Szczerbiak came in at the 7:32 mark, the lead was 92-88.
The Nets came all the way back and even took the lead, 93-92, before both teams decided to stick with their big guns for the remainder of the game.
Paul Pierce (31 points) and Wally Szczerbiak (25 points) carried the Celtics down the stretch. Vince Carter (23 points) was huge in the fourth quarter for the Nets.
The Celtics had a chance to tie the game on the final possession but could not get a shot off under New Jersey’s defense.
