Paul Pierce will be out of the lineup until at least Jan. 19, according to Celtics coach Doc Rivers.
“Obviously that’s a little longer than we anticipated,” said Rivers. “And that’s not a guaranteed date. It didn’t sound to me that the 19th meant play.”
Pierce will wear a walking boot for another week, and the team will wait until the boot is removed to make a final determination on when he will play.
“It has improved,” said Rivers. “It looked a lot better. I don’t think this is a setback at all.”
Pierce will attend most or all of Boston’s home games, and Rivers said he plans to incorporate the Celtics captain into practice or game preparation.
“I talked to him before we left about involving him in some of our coaches meetings so he can get an idea of what we do,” said Rivers. “We may even get him involved in practices, although I’m not sure what we’ll do. Maybe he can break some film down.”
