Wally Szczerbiak is out tonight for the Celtics with an injury. Gerald Green will start in his place.
Celtics coach Doc Rivers said Delonte West would miss at least the next two games with soreness in his back. Szczerbiak will be out a week, according to Rivers.
“He (Delonte) was cheating his body, and we knew at some point it was going to catch up,” said Rivers. “I’m surprised it went this long. When Delonte comes to you to tell you he can’t go, then it’s really bad.”
Rivers was unclear on the diagnosis of Szczerbiak’s injury.
“Wally has some swelling in his knee and his ankles or whatever,” said Rivers. “I don’t pay attention to what the actually injuries are anymore because there’s too long of a list for our team.”
The Celtics had some time to prepare for the absence of West, but Rivers said he did not see the Szczerbiak injury coming. Rivers said he would play Brian Scalabrine at the small forward spot to relieve Gerald Green. He also said to expect a lineup of Perkins, Jefferson, and Ryan Gomes on the floor at some point.
“Ryan has played no three this year in practice, so if you do see him out on the floor, we’re not going to run much,” said Rivers.
