What about Gomes?

Second-year Celtics forward Ryan Gomes was not selected to participate in the NBA’s Rookie Challenge, a game pitting the best players from the last two NBA drafts. Gomes is averaging 12 points and six rebounds per game this season and is shooting close to 50 percent from the field.

Andrew Bogut, Andrew Bynum, Monta Ellis, Raymond Felton, Danny Granger, Luther Head, David Lee, Chris Paul, and Deron Williams made the sophomore team. Granger, who plays the same position as Gomes, is averaging 13 points and 4.9 rebounds per game for Indiana. Bynum is averaging eight points and 6.5 rebounds per game for the Lakers.

“I think Ryan’s played great, but our record (stinks),” said Rivers. “I’ll never tell you who I vote in for the All-Star game, but I know I vote on record. You’re supposed to vote for who’s playing the best, but I think it’s easy to play well when your team is bad. You should get rewards when you’re winning and you should get punished when you’re losing.”

Green a slam dunk

Gerald Green will participate in the 2007 All-Star Slam Dunk contest, an industry source told Shira Springer Saturday. While the official announcement won’t be made until Monday, Celtics coach Doc Rivers has said all year he thinks Green’s participation would be a good thing.

“It would be great for him,” Rivers said last week. “In some ways you like him to rest and all that. But I just think any of that stuff is healthy.”

Rivers said he hopes the dunk contest will allow Green to showcase his talents on a bigger stage. The only concern the coach had was that yet another one of his players would go down with an injury.

“The way things have gone, I’m not sure,” said Rivers. “I think you have to have a teammate or something in it with you. Someone told me that. What could happen could be he jumps over a guy, he hits him in the head, and ‘bam, bam.’ No, I’m joking.”

Green is the only Celtics player invited to participate in any of the official festivities at All-Star weekend. Lucky, the Celtics mascot, and Courtney, a member of the Celtics dance team, were also selected to make the trip.

“I didn’t know that,” said Rivers before last week’s game with the Clippers. “A cheerleader is going? Are you serious?”
