The Celtics had a chance to win the game with 5.1 seconds left and the score tied at 85. Ray Allen inbounded to Paul Pierce from the sideline, and Pierce took a couple of dribbles before throwing up a fadeaway from the corner. Rasheed Wallace rebounded, and the Pistons had enough time to get another possession and eventually win the game.
“We had a couple of options and I came up wide open,” said Pierce. “I had a wide open look and I came up short. That’s what happens, I think I kind of rushed the shot and I should have held for the last shot…I took the first available open shot.”
Doc Rivers didn’t comment much on the last play, but Kevin Garnett seemed to be boosting Pierce’s ego in the postgame press conference. Garnett called Pierce one of the most clutch players in the game.
“He had a great shot. I’ll take that shot any day,” said Garnett.
