Analysis of Celtics-Pistons

A tough loss tonight for the Celtics, especially since they played so well in the first half, only to watch Detroit dominate the second half. It began when the Celtics fell asleep defensively and allowed Austin Daye to hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer of the first half. After halftime, the Celtics scored just 30 points on 9-for-34 shooting with 10 turnovers.

This is a game the Celtics win a month ago. But they are a team falling apart and they need Kevin Garnett’s leadership as much as his on-court presence.

Rasheed Wallace — Didn’t press too much in his return to Detroit but he learned that he isn’t the player he used to be, getting blocked by former teammates Jason Maxiell and Ben Wallace.

Ray Allen — Allen’s shot has been off all season and he missed some golden opportunities to get the Celtics close in the fourth quarter. The question is whether Allen is beginning to slip or if he is just going through a bad season.

Kendrick Perkins — Four rebounds in 35 minutes is a real disappointment for Perkins, who was agitated from the start and made some key miscues down the stretch. Four turnovers is too much.

Paul Pierce — 19 points in the first half, two in the second. If he is that hot, he needs to take more than 12 shots. On this night, he needed to be a volume shooter.

Rajon Rondo — His offensive night was good, but he didn’t match up well with Rodney Stuckey, who had his way offensively and also was free to grab rebounds (11).

Eddie House — If he shot isn’t going down, then he isn’t effective on the court and he had some big potential momentum-changing shots that didn’t fall. And that has been the case most of the season.

Tony Allen — Gave the C’s good first-half minutes but didn’t play much in the second half. The Celtics were a plus-7 with him on the court.

Brian Scalabrine — Six minutes, no points, three fouls and one turnover. Perhaps Doc Rivers should consider revising his role.

Glen Davis — Big Baby allowed a heckler to get into his head and he needs to improve his toughness in several categories. No rebounds in 15 minutes is not Big Baby-like. They need him to mature.
