The Celtics signed Tony Gaffney and Oliver Lafayette to nonguaranteed contracts largely for summer league purposes. The Celtics will field a team in the Orlando Summer League, and the signings are encouragement for the players to join the team there. The Nuggets made a similar move yesterday when they added Coby Karl and Brian Butch.
Gaffney went undrafted after finishing up a standout career at the University of Massachusetts in the 2009, spending time in the Lakers summer league and training camp before playing in Israel. Lafayette averaged 17 points and nearly 5 rebounds in 48 games with NBDL Fort Wayne this past season. Neither will be in Chicago, but both will be around the team for tomorrow’s season finale against Milwaukee and also throughout the playoffs.
