Doc Rivers offered no update on Jermaine O’Neal, saying his status hasn’t changed since the last update given by the team. O’Neal is expected to be out at least 2-3 weeks with a knee injury. No surgery is planned at this point.
Shaquille O’Neal and Semih Erden have played at center in O’Neal’s absence.
“Shaq being his age and Semih with his shoulder, you feel — I have at least, the last three or four games — like you’re playing on this thin sheet of ice,” said Rivers. “There may be a game that have no centers, and that could be soon. We just don’t know.”
The Celtics can get away with playing Glen Davis at center against some teams but will need size against others. Kendrick Perkins — who projects to return to his starting position in January or February — will provide added depth at center later in the year. Until then, the Celtics may struggle some nights to put big bodies on the floor.
