Austin Rivers named Naismith high school player of the year

The accolades keep pouring in for Doc Rivers’ son Austin Rivers.

Austin Rivers was named the Naismith High school basketball player of the year today, another highlight in a stellar prep career for the Winter Park (Fla.) guard. He’s already committed to playing for Duke.

Last week, he scored 25 points and nabbed 11 rebounds en route to the Florida Class 6A title. He averaged 29.2 points per game his senior year, according to USA Basketball.

“Being named the Naismith Player of the Year is a tremendous honor, especially considering only one person each year earns this prestigious award,” said Doc Rivers in a release. “As a parent, I am extremely proud of Austin and as a coach, I’m impressed with how hard he works each day on becoming a better player. Our family is full of pride that Austin is receiving such a remarkable accolade and will be noted with this amazing distinction in basketball history.”

Austin Rivers is roundly regarded as the No. 1 prospect in the country.
