Bill Russell was arguably the greatest team sports athlete in American history. Off the court, he was a giant in the civil rights movement. So why did it take so long for Boston to honor Bill Russell?
The debate over how Russell should be honored in Boston gained momentum in February when President Barack Obama presented Russell with the Medal of Freedom, and part of Obama’s remarks focused on his desire to see Russell honored with a statue in Boston.
Since then, videographers Sopan Deb and Darren Durlach began making a documentary on Russell’s life, his legacy and the right way to pay public tribute to him in Boston. They talked to Russell’s former teammates and community leaders about Russell the player and the man.
While this is a little longer than most stories we present in video form, we think the time is worth it.
